We have two levels of membership:
A Fueling Membership is for those who want to fuel out of the trailers on a long term basis. This also entitles the member to full voting rights in the Cooperative. We’ve had a lot of inquiries in the past about the high price of a fueling membership. Originally based on 30 members, each member initiation fee started out in January of 2006 at $500, but as membership increased, we were able to lower the fee to $250.
Fueling members are given a combination that opens the trailer doors and provides access to a solar/electric fuel pump. Members use an honor system to log their fuel draws based on the pump meter readings. Each member prepays a deposit for an allotment of 25, 50 or 100 gallons, depending on their anticipated average monthly usage. The member then draws against that amount, then repurchases again when needed, rather like keeping a rolling debit account at a credit union.
A Vistors Membership is temporary, for those who are traveling members of other coops or independent biodiesel sources out of town, and traveling thru Los Angeles and are in need of “travelers aid” in obtaining biodiesel. The contribution for a Visitors Membership is $6.25 for operating overhead, and a minimum purchase of a 25 gallon allotment or a full tank of fuel, whichever bulk purchase is the lesser. A trailer captain will have to be available to provide access to one of our two fuel jobber trailers.
Locations. Our fuel-jobber trailers are located at: the City Maintenance Yard in Torrance (a public site open 24/7/365), and; Cinnabar, in North East Los Angeles across the river from the LA Zoo (an industrial site with limited hours of access). Currently the Co-op is pumping about 1,000 gallons per month combined for both trailers, which means we still have more capacity for memberships in the communities surrounding the two sites.
